Los Angeles, Calif., August 8, 2019 – East Los Angeles Doctors Hospital (ELADH) announced today that it has awarded its 17th year of scholarships, through its Eduardo “Al” Lopez, M.D. Memorial Scholarship program, and has provided $18,000 to 12 students pursuing a higher education.

“There is nothing more important than investing in the education of the next generation,” said Victor Carrasco, CEO of ELADH. “Sometimes, all a student needs to become successful is a little help and support, and we are pleased to work together with our community in order to provide these funds to local students looking to pursue a future career.”

The scholarship program was initiated in 1991 by the Medical Staff at ELADH, and was renamed the Eduardo “Al” Lopez, M.D. Memorial Scholarship in 2011 to commemorate Dr. Lopez. Dr. Lopez was an Emergency Medicine Physician who practiced at ELADH for more than 30 years, was a graduate of Garfield High School, attended the University of Southern California on a full scholarship, and went on to matriculate from the USC Keck School of Medicine with a Medical Degree, and later to obtain his MA in Health Administration. He was a fine example and strong proponent for scholarships and the enablement of students to receive an education.

The scholarship is offered to graduating local high school students (Theodore Roosevelt High School, James A. Garfield High School, and Montebello High School), as well as to ELADH employees and their children. Funds are provided by ELADH and community partners who wish to make a donation. Recipients of the scholarship program will be celebrated and acknowledged at the annual Scholarship Luncheon.
